Abstract:
Road safety is and has been a concern, and there have been several calls to “act now”. Ambitious targets have been set - and missed. Actions and improvements have been introduced, but new areas of risk have arisen. While this is the time to discuss road safety, it is also the right time to reflect on the experiences and insights gained so far as we look ahead. This lecture will discuss the importance of a real world understanding when addressing road safety from different angles. Examples from how this understanding has led to concrete actions are given and they mirror the expansion of the context of the term “road safety”. The future role of safety research will also be reflected by looking at automated vehicles.
