Background and Current Research

Siddharth's current research focusses in identifying crash-prone areas for pedestrians based on various factors such as volume of pedestrians. The identification of hot spots of traffic deaths often does not account for the volumes of different road users. This underestimates the risk for the locations where volumes are low. This research addresses this important data gap. The study also plans to use mobile-phone-based origin-destination data for a region of Delhi, and develop a model to estimate on-road demand of walking (including for public transport use) using OD data. This demand is overlay with the built environment and population demographic features. The outcome of the research will result in small-area level models to develop the association between these features and the number of pedestrian crashes, using estimated on-road walking as an exposure variable. This will help identify crash-prone areas for pedestrians, normalised by the volume of pedestrians.
