Background and Current Research

Tanisha’s research focuses on the comparative assessment of traffic noise exposure and its impact on hearing among occupational drivers, with emphasis on three-wheeler and bus drivers in Indian urban environments. Her study examines how variations in vehicle type, route characteristics, and driving patterns influence the intensity and frequency spectrum of daily noise exposure. She conducts on-road noise measurements using digital audio recorders placed inside vehicles, complemented by pure-tone audiometry and speech-in-noise tests to evaluate hearing thresholds and speech perception abilities. The research also considers urban morphology, road infrastructure, and traffic flow to understand their role in noise propagation.

By integrating objective noise data with auditory performance outcomes, her work aims to highlight occupation-specific vulnerabilities and uncover differences in exposure patterns between driver groups. This evidence forms the basis for developing targeted noise mitigation strategies, guiding safer vehicle design, and informing public health interventions. Ultimately, her research seeks to contribute to policies and practical measures that protect drivers’ hearing health while improving overall working conditions in India’s transport sector.

Motivation for Research:

My interest in this research developed from observing three-wheeler and bus drivers spending long hours in noisy traffic conditions and wondering about the effects on their hearing health. Combining my background in environmental studies with an interest in public health, I was motivated to investigate this overlooked occupational hazard through systematic measurement and analysis.
