TRIPC Scholars Showcase Innovative Research at the 104th Annual TRB Meeting in Washington, D.C.

05 Feb 2025

New Delhi, January 2025 – Scholars from the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre (TRIPC) and the Civil Engineering Department at IIT Delhi showcased their pioneering research at the 104th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), held from January 5 to 9, 2025, in Washington, D.C., USA. The TRB Annual Meeting is one of the most prestigious global conferences in transportation research, bringing together leading experts, academicians, and policymakers from around the world.

Research Contributions from TRIPC

Five researchers from TRIPC and the Civil Engineering Department at IIT Delhi—Parveen Kumar, Debashis Ray Sarkar, Priyanshu Aman, Abu Nasar, and Mehrab Nazir—presented their work on critical issues in road safety, pedestrian safety, network-level crash analysis, and sustainable transportation. Their research highlights innovative methodologies, advanced statistical modeling techniques, and data-driven approaches in transportation engineering and injury prevention.

Research Papers Presented at the Conference

1) Determination of the Impact of Roadside Infrastructure on Fatal Crash Occurrence: An Empirical Analysis Using Power Spectral Segment Length (TRBAM-25-02421)

  • Authors: Parveen Kumar, Geetam Tiwari, Sourabh Bikas Paul
  • Summary: This study examines how roadside infrastructure influences fatal crash occurrences using a novel Power Spectral Segment Length (PSSL) methodology, providing insights into optimal segmentation for crash risk analysis.

2) Predicting Crash Frequency at Upstream Diverging Section of Toll Plaza in Heterogeneous Traffic (TRBAM-25-03242)

  • Authors: Debashis Ray Sarkar, Parveen Kumar, Kalaga Ramachandra Rao
  • Summary: This research develops a predictive crash frequency model for toll plaza diverging sections, utilizing traffic conflict analysis and surrogate safety measures to assess crash risk in heterogeneous traffic conditions.

3) A Comparative Assessment of Pedestrian Fatalities on High-Speed Roads in Rural Areas (TRBAM-25-02461)

  • Authors: Priyanshu Aman, Geetam Tiwari, Kalaga Ramachandra Rao
  • Summary: This study investigates pedestrian fatalities on high-speed rural roads, identifying key risk factors contributing to pedestrian crashes and proposing potential countermeasures.

4) A Comparative Analysis of In-Motion and Overnight Charging Infrastructure Design for E-Buses (TRBAM-25-06116)

  • Authors: Abu Nasar, Aman Sharma, and N. Nezamuddin
  • Summary: This research evaluates the feasibility and operational efficiency of in-motion versus overnight charging infrastructure for electric buses, optimizing charging strategies for urban transit networks.

5) Quantifying Road Network Structure and Its Impact on Traffic Crashes: A Bayesian Hierarchical Approach (TRBAM-25-03631)

  • Authors: Mehraab Nazir, Sai Chand, Rahul Goel
  • Summary: This study applies Bayesian hierarchical modeling to quantify the impact of road network structure on crash occurrences, offering valuable insights into road safety improvements.

6) Investigating the Impact of Speed Variation on Intersection Crashes Using Pervasive Traffic Data (TRBAM-25-05799)

  • Authors: Mehraab Nazir, Sai Chand, Rahul Goel, Abdul Hannan Azad, and Akash Shanbhog
  • Summary: This research analyzes speed variation at intersections using pervasive traffic data, highlighting its influence on crash risk and safety performance at urban intersections.
